How can I access BBC iPlayer outside the UK?

Nick asks:

I was following the debate around accessing Hulu etc. outside the U.S. using Hotspot Shield. Does anyone know if there’s a way of configuring this to work for the BBC iPlayer (outside the UK) or an equivalent service?

It’s easy, forget about Hotspot Shield, because it changes your IP adress to american. What you need to do is to download Expat Shield, THAT changes your IP to british. It works, I’ve been using it for months, plus, it’s free. Works 100%

You may already know or you may not know this, but according to my test, I found this serial of free VPN service are my best pick for US/CANADA/UK free VPN system:

Free United States  Hotspot shield VPN service from  http://www.freevpn.tv
Free Canda based    Hotspot shield VPN service from  http://www.freevpn.ca
Free United Kingdom Hotspot shield VPN service from  http://www.ukfreevpn.com

It’s pretty simple to use the service, they are all PPTP protocol based VPN, can be used by any OS or appliance which has PPTP client built-in. once setup the VPN a/c and get VPN connection, open a web site and it will prompt you to activate the free vpn session first, once you are done, you are free to use the internet for web browsing or anything, NO Ads, No Spamware, NO banner, Pure high speed VPN connection, really amazing!  Hopefully these service will last for ever :-)

BBC iplayer is an application which allows users to download or stream live TV and radio programmes to their mobile phones. And it is only available in the UK.

Unfortunately, it does not work for any of the BBC channels. However, it does work for some of the other channels I tried.

expat exe is your best bet, works a treat & is free. Just remember you will need to be able to use Xvid. If you don’t already have Xvid—– don’t use the link on BBC iPlayer, get it direct or from your regular safe on-line software source. My problem with expat exe is that it does not work on linux and I have to go back to Windows OS when I use it. jimeus13

I would love to see a solution here that actually works. I’ve been dying to watch BBC online.

As Tina says Hotspot Shield should work ok as long as you choose a UK proxy. Hulu won’t work with a proxy but needs a VPN to access.

There are loads of commercial options that sell subscriptions to UK proxies and VPN connections. I’ve used plenty of them and they work fine to access BBC Iplayer have been using them for ages.

I’ve got a video demonstrating the software (a paid subscription service) I use it when I’m travelling to watch the BBC. You can use free ones but you have to search for a long time everytime you want to watch – gets pretty tedious!

the best service you could get is ibVPN. http://www.ibvpn.com (new, fast and secure service)

Hotspot Shield or a UK proxy doesn’t work. Believe me, I’ve tried everything. You can’t access iPlayer from outside the UK – and I have spent years trying everything.

      Hide my ip works

    Nick,

you should be able to use Hotspot Shield. You would need to configure it with a UK proxy server IP address. So the only difference of the setup is the location of the proxy server.
